MIR 24H 35MM OPTICAL DESIGN

Mir 24 was put into production by the Russians as Nikon and m42. Nikon production was produced at the Vega factory in Arsenal, Ukraine, and the m42 was produced at the Kmz factory. The lens remained in production between 1976 and 1999 in all its series. There are versions of the mir 24 as mir 24h (pronounced 24n in our language), mir 24m, and versions with and without mc coating. In the early years, there was no mc coating, and later these multi-coated versions have increased resistance to rear and side light. While keeping the optical scheme used in previous versions, only some font colors on the lens have changed. While the diaphragm color was yellow before, it later changed to white.

Mir 24h 2/35 Physical Condition

The Mir 24 is built to be solid metal and rubber-plastic covering the focus ring only. The name, coating, production serial number, focus value and aperture value are written on the windshield, as in classical Russian lenses. The pre-filter diameter is 58 mm. It weighs approximately 340 g and is slightly heavier than its competitors in this regard. For example, mir 1b 37mm is only 240 gr. The clarity ring is fluid. The front optic does not rotate while focusing. Their coating has a brown-magenta mixture color. The rubber-coated ring close to the bayonet part is the focus, while the metal knurled ring on the back is the aperture ring.

The minimum aperture value is f2 while the maximum value is f22. It can take 8 stops of aperture value in this range. Diaphragm transitions are audible, that is, snaps. One of the best parts is that it can stop not only at full stops, but also at half stops, as in classic Nikons. For example, it can take the aperture value of 2.5 between 2 and 2.8. Half stops only exist between 11-16 and 16-22. Although the 6-bladed aperture blades are circular at f2 vf2.8, the corners are directly reflected in the bokeh after f4.

The closest focusing distance is measured at 24 cm. This distance is the distance between the object and the camera sensor. Therefore, the distance of the front part of the lens to the object is about 16-17 cm. This closeness allows for macro photography. Shooting macros also becomes fun when it’s wide-angle. Equipping the lens with macro features undoubtedly adds serious competitiveness to the mir 24h.

f5.6 macro

35mm lenses usually start at f2.8 or f3.5 aperture. A big advantage of the Mir 24h is its f2 aperture. In this way, serious light is received, the lens is accelerated and the background can produce more bokeh. Open aperture is always better.

Another advantage is that the minimum focusing distance we mentioned above is very short. Its focus from a very close distance of 24 cm provides superiority to mir24 in both bokeh and macro. Allowing different framing also allows the artist to enjoy even more while taking photos. Diversity increases in compositions.

Mir 24 35mm f2b Sharpness, Color and Contrast

Mir 24h can give the sharpness that will work in the middle at f2 aperture value. But it would not be correct to claim that it is very sharp at f2. Although the edges of the f2 diaphragm are disappointing, when looking at the areas of use, it can already be photographed with either a low diaphragm or an open diaphragm in the middle. Unfortunately, the corners don’t come together until I bring the aperture to 5.6. Of course, this applies to ff bodies. On the crop trunks, the edges are much better. It happens at the sharpest aperture in the middle like f8. For the edges, maybe I need to cut a little more, but for a 35mm lens, the edges do not need to be razor sharp.

With the Mir 24h, it is suitable for use in all kinds of digital cameras, whether it is canon nikon with ff, 1.5-1.6 crops or m43 systems with 2 x crops. It comes from 50-55mm on 1.5 X cameras, which turns into a full portrait lens at f2. There are reasonable values for bokeh and light. Again in m43, that is, in 2x bodies, the 70mm f2 value is close to ideal in portrait. It does not create any disadvantage in bokeh and light. Also, the macro value will increase even more and it will get closer to 1:1 macro on crop machines.

f5.6

We mentioned above that the Mir 24H 35mm f2 captures good focus in the center at f2 aperture, but poor sharpness in the corners. If values like F8, f11 are to be used, it feels like a street lens. With a moderately wide viewing angle in full frame, incredible sharpness and wonderful colors, one can always use the lens on the street. A lens that can create legends on the street and in street portraits.

Like F2, the contrast remains relatively low, but after f2.8 it’s great. The colors are not oversaturated, perhaps just as desired. If we take into account the digital interventions in color and contract, there is no problem.

F2 has a structure resembling whirlpool bokeh. But it’s not very obvious and the shots I’m talking about are only valid on full-frame cameras. The character of bokeh in cropped cameras is not very clear. Cat-eye-shaped bokeh is available up to f2.8. Then the corners are already starting to be felt. I think the ability to destroy the background is pretty good for a wide-angle lens. Even portrait photography can be taken at a level.

Disadvantages of Mir 24H

Since the pole on the left is quite far from the camera, no distortion is observed. but since the paving stones are close to the camera, the tilts are felt. Example at f5.6.

Let’s get to the disadvantages. In fact, there is no situation that can count too many disadvantages. The biggest handicap I can count is the rotation distance of the focus ring, which approaches about 270 degrees. Unfortunately, one hand movement is not enough and it may be necessary to leave it for the 2nd or even the 3rd time and to grasp and rotate it again. I can list another disadvantage as edge and corner sharpness at open apertures. 3. Although it is mc coated, I can say that it creates ghosts in back and reverse light. Although the ghost we are talking about is not excessive, it is especially notable at open apertures.

The lens also creates vignetting at f2 on ff bodies. And it goes down to f5.6. It is almost not obvious after F5.6. I don’t think it feels excessive in the open. It’s like a regular lens. Vignetting is much less pronounced on crop trunks. In addition, the night light trace, which we call coma, is clearly visible in f2. Again, it decreases gradually up to f5.6 aperture. Chromatic aberration, or Ca, is present as with all vintage lenses. I can’t say less or too much… It decreases as much as f8.

Since we are examining a wide-angle lens, we also need to consider distortions. In full-frame maki, observable distortion occurs. These tilts are disturbing if there is a line that goes all the way around the frame (or left to right). If these lines are present in the composition, and especially if they are close to the edges of the frame, distortion can be easily observed. These distortions are the biggest disadvantage of Mir 35mm.

As a result;

As someone who likes to use 35mm lenses, using the mir 24 h was quite enjoyable for me. Considering the purposes of use, there is almost no situation that will create a disadvantage. Like macro, it has serious advantages like f2. If I get a clean copy that hasn’t been peeled or corked, this is definitely a lens to add to my collection.

May your light be of good quality…
