Zoom Burst in Photography – Great Irrational Photos

In this article, we will examine the zoom burst technique. You can create creative photos with zoom burst. By doing night and day exposures, you can get dynamic photos separately. Now I will tell you the tips of this wonderful photographic technique.

What is a Zoom Burst?

It is a method of obtaining an effective photo with optical zoom during the photo taking. Lines extending towards the center, illusions, confusion … Zoom burst is a method that you can easily apply such effects that cannot be expected from a photograph.

zoom burst: 1/40 sec, 100 iso, f8, on hand, shifting from 200mm to 70mm

It is very easy to apply. As long as the screen is open, it is obtained by optical zooming in or out to the object taken with the zoom lens. The created photo will be a bit interesting. The aim is to catch this difference. Although lines are created from four corners of the frame towards the center, attention is drawn to the object in the center, but it is taken as an entertainment tool for amateur photographers by amateur photographers.

How to shoot the Zoom Burst? What do you need?

For this technique, a zoom lens and a timed mode camera will be sufficient. I will talk in more detail later in my writing; and for some longer zoom burst shots, we may need a tripod to keep our camera steady.

120mm to 90 mm zoom out. Blur is not much

We need to set the camera to shooting mode with S (or TV-time first mode) or M mode (full manual mode). The time setting is very important to us because zooming with high shutter speed is almost impossible. Although this speed is described differently in different sources, it is not possible to give a clear value. Frankly, I don’t mind those who value fixed. However, I think that the maximum shutter speed can be given according to the lens. I think the biggest shutter speed should be the longest focal length of the zoom lens to be used. For example, if 18-55mm lesn is to be used, the fastest snapshot should be 1/60 (1/55 for 1 / 60sec) I can say that the zoom burst can be used for 18-55mm at the highest 1/60 sec and below. This speed can be 1/40 sec or 1/2 sec.

As soon as we press the shutter, we turn the zoom ring of the lens. Thus, as long as the picture is taken, the optical shift movement will take place on the lens and our technique will start and end in a very fast time. again during this time, the light falling on the sensor will change its position (with zooming insult) and lines will appear towards the center.

  Tips of Zoom Burst Technique:

** I gave the greatest finesse to the previous paragraph. So you should choose shutter speed according to the lens and your shutter speed should be slow.

** One of the important factors in zoom in-out is that the machine does not vibrate despite the slow shutter speed. In order to prevent vibration, we should keep the vibration damping systems of the lens and the machine, if any, open.

200mm to 70mm. very hard zoom burst.

** Another way to prevent vibration is to use a tripod. Flickering will certainly be at relatively lower pitch speeds. We must use a tripod to avoid getting a completely blurry photo.

** You can use shutter and zoom movement differently to make the focus effect different. For example, with the 18-200mm lens, the swipe motion from 200mm to 18mm will produce much more horizontal lines, while the swipe motion from 200mm to 100mm will make the horizontal linear movement less but the object in the center more understandable.

Note the Shutter Speed

** Likewise, mental blur caused by horizontal lines is also related to shutter speed. In the photo taken with 1/60 in the zoom done with the 18-55mm lens, the lines will be less pronounced, while the lines will be more dominant when taken with a speed of 1/5. It is easier to create images that deceive the eye or exhaust the mind at lower shutter speeds. In the same way, slowly turning the zoom ring makes the lines more pronounced, while turning the ring too fast causes the lines to appear more faint.

** In order to improve the quality, ISO should be minimized and the diaphragm should be around f8 (it can be higher if appropriate). But these values can always differ by light. It is best to determine the value and shoot by trial and error according to the environment. The focus should be on the midpoint and the midpoint on the subject to focus.
** The other name of the zoom burst is zoom in zoom out. Zoom in-out focuses directly on the subject in the middle. If you have the correct setting, you can clear the object in the center clearly. In the long exposure zoom in-out technique, you can create different compositions as if you were dancing with light.
** Zoom in-out technique is created entirely optically. Although amateurs who do not know the photographs think that these images are created with a photocopier on the computer, this is not the case. But this effect can also be given in Adobe Photoshop program. Similar images can be created even if the exact same effect does not occur. Keep it in mind.

** If you want the center focus center to be larger and clearer, use a wide-angle zoom lens. In addition to the linear effect in a large frame, you will see that there is more space left for the focus of the center.
** You can simply rotate the camera you have fixed on the tripod from the center during optical scrolling to create even more different frames in the zoom burst. In this way, lines will emerge from the flatness and begin to form in the shape of a vortex. Or if you are confident, you can try handheld shooting. but handheld shooting is really a question.

** At relatively slower shutter speeds (or in long exposure zoom bursts), you can shoot very different frames by illuminating the subject at any point of the frame with the help of the camera’s built-in flash or an external flash. Of course, do not forget to set the flash mode as slow-rear sync from your camera.

Zoom burst with Long Exposure

Long exposure taken at 20 seconds with zoom out. The park stood in place normally, but the lights were drawn as if it were gushing.

** Zoom burst technique can also be combined with long exposure. For example, with a fluid zoom lens on the tripod for 3-5 seconds, very different frames can be obtained by minimizing vibration. In this type of photographs, only the lights will come out in line, while the basic frame of the photograph will be clear.

** The lights add different effects to the photograph in a longer zoom burst. The lights shining around at night will be reflected on the photo like a line and you will take magnificent photos. What you need to do is adjust the time according to the ambient light.
For example, if zoom burst is photographed with 20 seconds long exposure, f5.6 and iso 200 values are sufficient in TV or M mode. The camera must be fixed on the tripod. After shooting begins, zooming in with the zoom lens is made and the photo is expected to complete. The approximation takes about 1 seconds. During this time, the lighted places will come out as a line. The photograph of the medium is taken for the remaining 19 seconds. Thus, the sliding lights are reflected in the frame as if they were not part of the still image taken.
