What is Panning in Photography? Tricks of the Pan technique – Application

In this article, we will talk about photo shooting techniques, Pan technique. In the photo, we will focus on questions such as what is Pan, how to apply, what should be considered, what are the tricks, how to take a pan photo.

What is Panning in Photography?

Pan in Photography: It is the technique of photographing a moving object at a suitable time, following the view of the camera from the viewfinder (or from the screen) at a suitable time. While the object followed in the photographs taken with this method is clear, all the details in the background will be blurred and our object will come to the fore. By creating a background blur in line with the background movement, a different atmosphere will be added to the photo.

Although the pan technique is not a very difficult method, it has many important points to pay attention to. Let’s take a look at these points.

Pan Motion Tricks in Photography

** First of all, we should choose a suitable location open according to the arrival state of the object we will photograph. A position that will not prevent us while doing object and tracking … You will feel that the location is very important as you pan.

** Shutter speed should be kept as low as possible since it is desired that the background will appear blurred. Depending on the lens used, a speed at which our captured object can come out clearly will be appropriate. For example, a speed of around 1/25 or 1/50 is sufficient with lenses such as 35mm or 50mm. But if you have a 300mm lens, even 1/200 will be far-fetched.

** Since speed is important to us, we should use the camera in speed-controlled mode. This will either be tv-S or manual mode. It will be inconvenient for PAN as other modes automatically assign the shutter.

** The diaphragm must be somewhat narrow. Since we shoot a moving object, we need to keep the net depth of field too high. It is appropriate for the diaphragm to be an average of f8- f11. We should try to adjust the aperture of the diaphragm considering the iso. We should keep the diaphragm at the proper setting without increasing the ISO value too much. For example, f 11 ISO 200 can be a suitable value. Even if there is a way to bring ISO to its minimum value, it should be done.

The Most Important Auxiliary Equipment for PAN: Tripod-Monopod

** The vibrations that may occur will be reflected in the photograph, as it will be shot at a relatively low shutter speed and the camera will move. It is necessary to look for a way to minimize these vibrations. It should be used if there is a tripod. In fact, it will be more useful to use a monopod rather than a tripod in such shots. Because the monopod rotates horizontally, it is more comfortable than a single leg. On the tripod, we can follow the object by using the head in a playing position. If we are going to shoot in hand, we should press our feet firmly, grasp the camera and lens with both hands and take the shot by making a spin on our waist.

** It will be very useful to use lenses and machinery with anti-vibration if available. One of the most useful methods to prevent unwanted vibrations is vibration prevention systems. Nowadays, cameras have anti-vibration systems from sensors. Therefore, the vibration can be reduced, regardless of the lens.

The Most Important Case of Panning: FOCUS

** The most common mistakes in Pan technique in photography are those related to the inability to adjust the focus. Focusing is one of the most difficult aspects of this technique. Because the moment we took the object with the moment we tracked it, the object has shifted and there is no time to focus again and again. The focus function of your camera that can track the subject in AF-C position should be changed. Thus, when the camera is locked on the subject with half shutter, it will provide focus until shooting. But I would like to remind you that for very fast objects, the tracking ability of entry-level machines may be insufficient.,

** Another way to get the focus right is to use the lens manually. However, this method can be very difficult for friends who do not use (can not use) manually and may lead to missing focus. The sensitivity of the sharpness ring should be tested before shooting, the object should be followed in accordance with this sensitivity and shooting should be performed.

A very useful method for focusing:

Switch the lens to manual mode. Determine where to shoot the object in advance and clarify that point in advance. No need to deal with the focus ring again. Follow the subject from the viewfinder and shoot when it reaches the area you previously determined. If the diaphragm is short enough, depth of field is more than enough. I am sure you will get a nice frame.

*** It will always be beneficial to use multiple shots rather than single shots from the camera settings. Some shots may not be repeated, and for some reason not paid attention, the composition will come and go suddenly. The single frame you shoot may also be inaccurate. Therefore, even one of the consecutive shots can save the day if it is error free.

Achieving the pan technique in one go is like creating a miracle. You may need to take many shots for the best. It is necessary to take time and shoot again without getting tired. Whenever possible, try with different compositions in different venues. Don’t expect high quality shots every time. But do not forget that you can make beautiful photos after getting used to it.

Moving Pan Technique

In this article, let me talk about a method that I call Moving Pan. This method is not as detailed as I explained above. In this method, you should move in the same direction with the moving object in the same direction. To pull a motorcycle and its rider, for example, you should move in the same direction as him at a speed close to him. Therefore, you should also get into a vehicle and you should not be a driver. Also, you don’t even need to adjust the shutter aperture. Focus with autofocus and complete shooting with multiple shots. Shooting is successful unless there is a very high shutter speed. The photos taken with this method are much more successful. For example, if you take a passenger on another bus that goes to the same direction while driving on a bus, it will be an example of the method I am trying to talk about.

** Another point where you can shoot the best pan is the roundabouts. You can take amazing PAN photos from a roundabout close to the center or center. While the objects are moving at roundabouts, the distance to the center mostly does not change. Therefore, you can complete your shots without leaving the depth of field you will measure with your lens and making extra adjustments.

Let your light be Quality.
